1.
Deeper than the deepest sea Higher than the highest peak Further than the furthest morning I will go, I will run Darker than the darkest night Softer than the softest wind Brighter than the brightest sun I'll be there, I will come When you're feeling all alone Stretched out on the frozen stone Look above and call my name We're the same, we're the same All have walked your lonesome path Few have made it, none remain And for your tears do not be sorry The bluest sky can turn to rain
2.
Read your name in the newspaper Turned away, but my vision blurred Took a walk around the block Collapsed and traced myself in chalk And when I woke up in the rain All wrapped up in a rusty chain I crawled back in my cell Threw the key into the well So I sit back down on the couch and think And I lay back down on my bed and drink And I try to get some rest Forget the pressure in my chest Oh, someone's banging on my door Where'd I put that .44 Yes I told my neighbors twice I scare easy in the night Well I try, I try, I try to get ahold of my mind But the clock goes tick, tick, tock Guess that's just the price you pay for love Day by day, I missed the signs That you were dragging far behind And I was up ahead Looking back at something dead But from a distance I was blind And you were tongue-tied in your mind Well it had to be that way For us both to really stay Sunday, I sold back your ring That diamond flashed a wicked grin As the jeweler wrote a check Made out to folly and regret And as I stumbled through the store I turned around like once before And a vision crossed my mind I knew I'd end up here in time Well I try, I try, I try to learn from all that I done wrong But it's true, I still did it all for you Guess that's just the price you pay for love One friend told me time will heal And another friend said time will steal Your heart eventually There's no way out, you see I said, where does love fit into this He said, it's a game of hit or miss But if you're a gambling man Well, I'd draw another hand So when I close my eyes tonight And listen to the neighbors fight I'll pretend its you and me Thats how I wish that it could be But I'm stuck inside my shrunken head In my freezing room, in my empty bed And I have nowhere to hide I hope you're satisfied Well I try, I try, I try to tell myself that its alright I'll get through and I'll wish the same for you Guess that's just the price you pay for love

Life On Hold 04:05
Ship's pulling in, light house is hidden Your thoughts are thin, your mind's forbidden Unload the barrels of the ancient blood you stole Fog blows cold, whispers softly, your life's on hold Wake up with a bottle staring up into the void Everyone's gone except for me, who I avoid Dry off the rain and wipe the dirt off from your coat It's time to fold, you always lose with your life on hold For all my years, I've been mistaken Your poison tongue was weak and shaking I trusted you would give me everything I need You robbed me blind, and then you sold me a life on hold I read your letter, yes it tangled up my mind You're feeling better, but I only feel behind I'm sweeping up the pain you left me in your wake Now you're dressed in gold, while I'm wearing black for a life on hold Time slips away, light as a feather And I lose track of things untethered You'll pull the blinds one day and take a final bow Your tale's untold, as you lose control of a life on hold Far out to sea, beyond the sunset Inside the clouds, no room for regret I'll use your weakness just to harness my own strength Do what I'm told, yes I'll take some help for a life on hold
4.
Bert's Blues 04:05
Why don't you try to be a little honest with me Before we're old and gray I plead and I pray that you'll come back someday But love shouldn't have to wait The mirror still holds your silver and gold Your teacup sits patiently While I browse every book for the wrong turn I took All I see on the page is your name So give me a sign that I'm not wasting time A letter, a postcard, a call I wait in the rain, I watch every train Been kicked out of every bar Well they whisper in town you were seen in a gown And a prince swept you up off your feet Now the waitresses grin every time I walk in And the dogs hang their heads in the street In the bleak, quiet dawn with the radio on I picture your car pulling in The church bells would ring and the bluebirds would sing And the rumors would sail with the wind I'd give you my word, but promises, you've heard And I know that I've broken a few But if I held you dear, you'd know I was sincere To roses, I bid adieu
5.
The darkest days, they come on like a storm And I forget, we can all be reborn Standing on stilts, I gaze upon the moon Laced up in mist, she vanishes so soon But through the night, you give me artificial light Coyote cries, hungry to the bone Blood on a branch, drips into the snow A restless wind, wakes me with a fright Shadows creep in, I pull the curtain tight But through the night, you give me artificial light Within your eyes, the world stops its spin Outside myself, enchanted by your grin Undressed at dawn, the moon sails out to sea And in her wake, we dream of what could be All through the night, you give me artificial light Oh my shelter, my lover, it's over
6.
Firefly, over the mountain, can you light my way Through this darkened sky, on this starless night Firefly, over the water, can you take me where Silver angels sing, on this starless night

about

Pitch Perfect describes The Milk Barn Sessions as “rustic poetry,” filled with “slyly humorous lyricism, clever metaphor, and brilliant turns-of-phrase.”

In January 2021, my brother and I took a break from isolation and escaped to a tiny, old milk barn on a farm in upstate New York. Fueled by borscht and a dysfunctional wood furnace, we spent the next week recording songs I wrote at the height of the pandemic - songs born of fear, tragedy, uncertainty and longing, but also hope beauty, stillness and reflection.

The surrounding winter world inspired us and became part of the recordings. The crackle of the fire, the lonesome coyote howling at the moon, birds chirping in the snowy trees - it all added, sometimes literally, to the intimate, meditative atmosphere of the music.

This EP celebrates the healing power of art and creation under harrowing circumstances, with a healthy dose of collaboration, improvisation and persistence. Technically, it's two years in the making. But in essence, it's a lifetime in the making. I've wanted to record my own music since I was a child, and I see this as a launching pad for much more to come. Enjoy, and thanks for listening!
